About

The City of Columbus Code Enforcement Division enforces local ordinances and safety standards to ensure rental properties remain structurally sound, safe, and sanitary under the International Property Maintenance Code.

If your landlord fails to maintain your rental home up to code, you can initiate the compliance process by filing a report directly with the Code Enforcement Office at 662-245-5070 or through their online portal.

Once reported, an officer reviews the complaint and conducts an on-site property investigation to inspect issues like heating, plumbing, electrical systems, or structural hazards. If violations are verified, the city issues a formal Notice of Violation letter ordering the landlord to complete required repairs by a set deadline. Following a re-inspection, if the landlord still refuses to comply, the case is escalated to the City Attorney for legal action and a formal hearing before the Mayor and City Council.
